I was once a human, but now I am cursed with being a killer. Nothing you can say or do will keep me from sinking my teeth into your veiny neck. The slightest smell of blood makes my chilling veins boil, in delight.
School was canceled on account that a janitor had killed himself. But other than that it was a perfect day, sunny and bright. I decided to take a stroll through our meadow in the back yard. My family lived on a twenty acre farm that housed the workers and the animals. My father loved his farm, but debt was threatening to take it away.
My thoughts wondered as I walked, mostly about how sad it would be to leave. How awkward it would be not to wake up by a roaster but by an alarm clock. But also about my dear mother who passed away from cancer. She was the only one who ever understood what it’s like to be the youngest in the family.
I started going further and further into the meadow not realizing how far away from home I was going. It wasn’t until I stepped on a twig did I realize I was in the woods way beyond our families farm. I was now the deep dark woods whose past haunted everyone in our small town.
I tried going back and then back to where I started; than going back and back again but it was no use. I was lost to the point I thought I would never be found. All I had with me was the cloths on my back, and my coat which I had brought along in case it started to rain. Was I ever glad I brought it; the chilling cold blew all around me shaking the leaves.
I walked till it was pitch black and I couldn’t see anything in front of me. The only noise I could hear is the wind blowing through the green reborn leaves. It was a sound I liked and was used to, spring was my favorite time of year. I made a bed out of twigs and old leaves damp from frost.
The sounds around me must have helped, for I fell asleep in no time. When I woke, nothing had changed still the same old woods and still the same old me. But I felt warmth behind me, I hear a twig snap. For a second my heart stopped, my mind wondered of the danger behind me. My imagination got the best of me and imagined in being a creature unknown about to attack and kill me.
“Are you awake?” an unknown voice startled me from behind.
I slowly turned to see a boy my age crouching next to a fire. “Yes, yes I am awake.”
“I found you lying in the middle of the woods last night. At first I thought you were dead. But then I tasted your blood and knew that it was fresh.”
“My blood!” I said startled with his sentence.
“Yes, your blood was sweet, and fresh. I only took enough that would fill me up and keep you alive. You should be thankful that I did not kill you.”
“Thankful, why should I be thankful? You’re a monster that tasted my blood. What and who are you?” I was shaking with fear that I couldn’t even stand.
Be for I knew what happened he was tilting my head backward looking into my eyes. “I my dear sweet child,” he leaned in close “I’m a Vampire. Just like you.”
Dazed I sat still shaken from the words that penetrated my ears. The words I never thought I would hear, the words I never spoke, because of the fear that they did exist. I thought in my head of running, but which direction would I go? Left, right, or backward. No matter which way I would go I was certain he would follow. I could risk my family life or I could stay and risk my own.
“Why did you change me? Why didn’t you just kill me off?”
“If would have killed you, I would be blamed. Keeping you alive would save me the burial. Plus who knows how many hairs I left back at the scene. I would have been hunted down by the police. My fingerprints are all over you. But if you were dead you wouldn’t have swarmed and I wouldn’t have slipped. And wouldn’t have to be worried about anything, because I wouldn’t have touched you.”
