Grace, there is an ancient saying I think we had better abide by from now on; Cordrils will be where they will be. It is best to get out of his way.”

“What about you?” The Patriarch pointed at Jonis’s uncle who was barely even able to stand.

Jonis’s uncle lifted his head as if every bit of it ached. He blinked blearily and gave a small shake. “He gave me a gift. I heard my sister’s last thoughts in my head. She wished me well, and all my brothers well. And she told me she wanted her son to live.”

“It was a deception,” a hunter holding him up hissed in his ear.

Jonis’s uncle gave him a dry look and shook his head. “No. I know my sister. It was she. And worse, when I first saw the boy, I knew a part of her was in him. He has her heart. So gentle.”

“Impossible,” the Patriarch ground out, scanning from one side of the room to another for support. No one else budged, all averting their eyes as if to avoid being sent after the Cordril.

“Leave him alone,” the uncle said, squaring his shoulders as he gaze on the leader of their nation. “All he wants is to make his mother proud, to be like the man she loved, the one she loved before his father killed him and took his place. And I see that in him, even as a Cordril.”

A murmur rippled through the courtiers and tradesmen. Several guards shifted their feet as if suddenly uncomfortable in their armor. Gazing over the crowd, the Patriarch knew he was looking like a complete fool if he let the demon get away, yet it was apparent that he was not yet ready to take this one on. Humiliation seemed the only result if he did not act quickly.

Refusing to let this demon supercede his power, he lifted his chest and declared, “I, the Great Sovereign, the Patriarch of Brein Amon declare, Lieutenant Jonis Macoy as the personal demon hunter of the Nation of Brein Amon, under the charge of the office of Patriarch.”

The people solemnly accepted it with a “Let it be done.”

“Oh, good.”

Every head turned, looking to the ride side doorway. There, Jonis leaned against the doorjamb with yet another sandwich in his hands.

“I guess that means I get to keep this coat. However, I’m losing the rest of the uniform. It is not very practical for demon hunting. Also, stop calling me Lieutenant. I prefer just to be regarded as Jonis.” Jonis then smiled and took another bite of his sandwich.

Someone’s spear clattered to the ground, dropped perhaps in shock.

“Are you still here?” The Patriarch went completely white, falling back against his chair. Noticing Jonis’s newly acquired lazy manner with dread. For him it bode of ill things to come.

Giving a shrug, Jonis nodded, hefting his sandwich up for all to see. “Of course. You don’t expect me to leave for Dalis on an empty stomach, do you? Danslik makes me so hungry!”

Jonis lowered his sunglasses over his eyes and grinned, walking back into the side hall towards the kitchen with a casual stride.

Placing his head in his hands, the Patriarch muttered, “Someone get me pain medication. I am forming a headache.”
