The day is brilliant silver-white through the shears behind the curtains drawn open. I see the shadow of a bird flit onto the sill, become stone for a moment, and then fly away.

“Do we intend to get up?” I ask. I’m not the least bit hungry. I’d be happy to stay here all day.

Matthew answers me, “We do not.”
