Prologue

Kate's pov
I was in the backyard of my house when it happened. I was swimming in the lake, even though we have a pool. Then the ground shook, just a little. “Jimmy?” I called, thinking maybe my little brother was playing a trick on me. He was known for that.
But, a tiny voice in the back of my head was telling me there is no way Jimmy knows how to make the ground shake.
And I knew it was right.
“Earthquake!” I yelled, even though our isolated home in Florida wasn’t known for them. But nobody rushed out to save me. I was alone. Then the water in the middle of the lake started to spin around, like a little whirlpool. But it was getting bigger by the second, and the ground was shaking harder. I knew then I was in big trouble. I tried to swim out, but by this rate it was impossible. I willed my legs to move, to even try and save myself, but it was going against my command, my will power. Then something started emerging out of the water. I was too mesmerized to even blink, as I realized when tears were coming out of my eyes. Or maybe it had something to do with the fact that I was scared. I’m going to die at sixteen. That was the first thought that entered my mind. Then the Dolphin emerged. The weird thing about the Dolphin was that it was made entirely of water. When I looked into its intelligent eyes, I wasn’t scared anymore.
“You are the chosen one,”it said, with a voice as smooth as water. ”You will fight against evil and protect humankind. I will provide protection and guidance. I give you the gift of water.”
With that it touched the tip of its mouth to my forehead and disappeared.

Chapter 1 Kate's Point of View

I awoke with a start. I realized I slept on top of the book I was reading. It was Journey of the Seas, by Gwendolyn Thomas. I looked over at my sister and saw that she was moving around. I realized she was also having a bad dream. I got up to get a drink of water. I went to the kitchen and poured myself a glass. When I put the cup to my lips, I realized how thirsty I was, and finished the cup in five seconds flat. I poured myself another glass and drank it. Then I picked up the entire gallon and started chugging it down. I then realized my older sister was standing at the kitchen door, staring at me open mouthed.
“What are you doing downstairs at this time?” I asked her knowing that she could never wake up at 1 am and come downstairs
“I was cold, and I wanted to sit next to the fire place. You?
“Isn’t it obvious?” I answered pointing at the empty gallon. “I was thirsty.”
I followed her into the den and watched her start a fire. She sat next to me on the couch. By the next few minutes I couldn’t keep my eyes open and slept on the soft pillow. The next morning I woke up with her sleeping right in front of the fire place. It was still running just the same as a few hours back.I wondered why she wasn’t burning.

Chapter 2 Samantha's POV

“Samantha! Get ready for school!”
That was my grandma calling me. I could barely stand up. I was still exhausted from last night. I couldn’t believe how my sister drank that gallon so fast! And I had the weirdest dream. It was about some bird telling me I was the chosen one and stuff. The weirdest part was that the phoenix (yes, I just realized what it was) was made out of flames. It said something about giving me the gift of fire.
“Samantha, I’m not calling you again!” I looked over at the couch and realized my sister had already got up and left. I looked at the clock and saw that it was 7:00. I had to be at school by eight.
“I’m awake. I’m awake,” I shouted at my very frantic grandma. I went upstairs and when I was done with the restroom, I put on my Rose High cheer leading outfit. Today was a big day. It was the first home game in the basketball season. I brushed my hair and tied it back with the purple and black ribbon. To get more into character, I put on purple eye shadow with the whole black “smoky” thing going on. I figured it was my job as team captain to have the most spirit in the school. After one last look in the mirror, and a final swipe of lip gloss, I was on my way to school.

Chapter 3 Kate's POV

“Finally, lunch.”That was my friend Chris talking.
“Do you always have to think about food?” I had to admit I agreed with Mariah.
“No,” Chris retorted. “I just like to think about an entire hour without a teacher lecturing us. And don’t tell me about how school is good for me, Kate. We all know you hate the teacher’s voice, too.
“What about study hall?” said Sarah.
“There is a teacher there, and we aren’t allowed to talk.”
I tried to ignore them as we walked over to the corner of the second floor hallway, where we usually eat. My mind was trying to wrap around what happened last night. I don’t even like water; my petite body preferred the wondrous taste of Coca Cola. After we sat down and got settled, Adam slid down and squished himself between me and Mariah.
“Hey, Beautiful,” he said. He bent over and started kissing Mariah.
“Get a room.” I glanced up and saw Samantha heading down the hall. My sister was with her two friends, Kathleen and Robin, all dressed in their cheer leading uniforms. Samantha wasn’t a snobby cheerleader, but she did get on my nerves sometimes. Several boys stopped what they were doing to get a good look at my sister and her friends’ butts as they walked down the hall.Not all the boys were looking at her, but most were.
Most including Chris.
“Hypocrite, much?”I murmured, facing him with my eyebrow raised. He blushed a deep red.
“She’s hot”
“Of course, but I must remember, was it not you who was telling me last week about how women were being treated by their looks, and that you only look at women from the inside out, not the other way around?” I was still smirking at him when he narrowed his eyes, and told me,
“You may have gotten this round, but this point war ain’t over!”
“I wouldn’t dream of stopping, you were the one who started it, plus I’m up by like a hundred points”
“Twenty-seven”
“What?”
“You are only up by twenty-seven points.” He showed me a piece of paper.
“Whatever,” and we went back to eating. I noticed though, that the paper had nothing written on it. I had to chuckle at my crazy friend.
I looked over at Mariah and Adam, and saw that their lips were still locked. I rolled my eyes and told Chris I was leaving to go to the library. He waved me off concentrating hard on some homework he was working on. I got up, and started walking toward the library, lugging my heavy backpack with me.
