A Word To The Readers
An artist’s life is hard. You won’t make it in the world if you don’t have the skill or the fame. You could be the next big thing or the next big mess. An artist’s life is also a lonely life. Art is the only thing you must think about. Art is the only thing you live for. Art is your living breath. An artist’s strives to climb the pyramid of fame and glory, and to one day be brought down in history as the shining artist that reached the top of that pyramid. No artist has time to dilly-dally. No artist has time for feelings. No artist... has time to love. An artist can only look from the sidelines and think of how it might be to play in that game of love.*

“Class, your quarter project will be to make an art piece that represents what you love. It can be anything you want. Make it deep, meaningful, revealing. Challenge your boundaries,” Mr. Hunt annunciated every word that came out of his mouth. “They will be due at the end of the quarter. You have three weeks to finish it. Any questions?”
Angelina raised her hand.
“Yes?” Mr. Hunt called on her.
“But Mr. Hunt, if you assign a project like that, some of us won’t be able to do it,” she whined.
Immediately, I knew she was talking about me.
Oh, God, Angelina, just leave me be woman.

“Some of us don’t have anything they love… yet. Like Haydn, of course,” she continued, fluttering her eyes at me.
I cringed at the thought of even liking her. Everyone turned his or her head toward me. I blatantly glanced at them then shrugged, keeping my signature poker face.
“Well then do it about something that fascinates you. Something weird, out of the ordinary,” Mr. Hunt replied.
“Yeah! Like Annalisa!” Angelina shouted jokingly, pointing out the window.
I looked out the window. A girl was climbing up a tree, holding what look like dropper full of unknown substance. She had her bright orange, knee-length dress tied up at her waist, revealing her white shorts underneath. Her hair was messily tied in a bun. We all watched as she climbed up higher and higher and higher. Struggling, she reached a final tree branch which she propped herself on top of. She took the beaker and reached over into a small bird’s nest. Three naked, pink, baby bird heads poked in and out of sight.
“What a freak? Who the hell would want to go through the effort of doing something as stupid and disgusting as that? Oh wait, Annalisa would!” Angelina sneered.
The room bursted into laughter. I closed my eyes, my eyebrow twitching with anger. To calm myself down, I messed around with the track pad on my laptop. They continued laughing and pointing at Annalisa.
“How did she even get into this school? This is a school for gifted artists, not special cases

,” Angelina laughed.
I abruptly stood up and slammed my laptop’s screen down. I was so sure I would have to take it into the Tech Office for repair by how hard I slammed it and how angry I was. No, wait, I wasn’t angry, I was furious

. I was not furious because the whole classroom followed Angelina’s lead, I’m not furious because Mr. Hunt didn’t bother to stop them, I was furious because of Angelina’s obnoxious bullying of the poor girl. Give it a break. I have never met Annalisa before or seen her before, but because of Angelina’s constant taunting, Annalisa has become infamous in the school. The room went silent. Everyone’s mouth dropped and they stared at me. Even Mr. Hunt was surprised by my actions. I kicked my chair across the room and slung my laptop’s case strap over my head and onto my shoulder. I slowly walked out of the room, slamming the door behind me. I could hear muffled Mr. Hunt say, “Alright, um, I guess class is dismissed,” as I walked farther and farther away from the classroom. I just want to get the hell out of there before Angelina and her posse catch up to me.
I soon found myself outside. I covered my eyes because the bright spring sun was unmerciful on my eyes. All was quiet. Everyone was probably at there next class. I guess I’ll just skip this period. It’s just math, no big deal. I scanned the area. The green grass and white stone walkways looked elegant, as if they were complimenting each other. I climbed down the short staircase from the school doors, to the ground. As I reached the ground, I could feel the small bumps and curves in the textured stone through my converse shoes. It’s ground like this that I wished my converse weren’t so flat. I walked over to a nice, shady patch of grass hidden behind hedges and a small apple tree. The apple tree was blossoming with small pink flowers. The wind gently blew, carrying the loose flower petals with it. In the distance I could hear the water flow in the grand fountain at the school square.
Bliss

, I thought to myself.
I placed my laptop down by the tree and laid my head down. I brush my dark blonde bangs out of my face and put my arm over my eyes. That was a stupid idea. I forgot I was wearing my watch and hit myself in the eye.
“Ow, damn it. Ugh, Haydn, Angelina and her posse are spreading their stupidity to you,” I muttered to myself.
Relaxing my body, I spread out. My arms and legs lay limp on the soft, spring grass. I let my light blue eyes drift up. I stared at the gently swaying leaves and branches of the apple tree. The sun peeped through here and there where the leaves were spread apart. I took in a deep breath and sighed.
Hm, something I love? What do I love? I love art… but I can’t really think of anything for that. Um. Pretty much only love art. This project will be the death of me,

I thought and thought.
The hedge beside me rustled and snapped back into reality. I sat up quickly, balancing my weight on my hands.
“Who’s there?” I shouted.
The rustling stopped. I tried to see who or what it was. It was probably a rabbit or something. Hm, a rabbit, a rabbit is a sweet, peaceful creature, so cute and furry, the perfect subject yet simplest thing to draw. There isn’t anything you can dislike about a rabbit. I guess you can say I like rabbits.
“Hey, Ms. Rabbit, you might the only thing I’ve ever liked in my life besides art. This is really retarded. I’m talking to a rabbit. Well, what the heck, minus well make a fool of myself. Ms. Rabbit, would you care to go out with me? Seeing as you’re the only one I like?” I said to Ms. Rabbit. “Ah, I am an idiot.”
“Sure,” a voice answered back.
“Wha!” I screamed, losing my balance.
My arm jerked out from underneath me and I fell flat on my face. I lifted my head up, spitting a few pieces of grass and dirt out. I quickly took my glasses out of my pocket and put them on. A girl began to climb out of the hedge, coming into full view. Her long curly brown hair framed her face and gentle smile. Her hazel eyes sparkled with excitement. Her face was so childlike; she looked like she could be an angel. Her white skin was scratched here and there with band-aids up and down her limbs. If she were an angel, she probably fell from Heaven by the looks of it. My heart skipped a beat. I’m not sure if it was from surprise or if cupid’s arrow had just pierced my heart.
“Sorry, didn’t mean to startle you. I’m Annalisa,” she introduced herself.
I could say nothing. My mouth hung wide open and I didn’t have the power to close it. It was as if I were a grand piano top being propped up during show time.
“I, um, I’m, I’m Haydn,” I stuttered.
“Nice to meet you. You know it’s nice to know the name of someone who just asked you to be his girlfriend,” she giggled.
