New Beginnings

We were finally at the airport but man the traffic was bad, i glance at my watch again and inwardly curse our timing. The cab driver cut it way too close. As soon as he stopped the car we paid him, and hastily ran into the airport and towards security to go through the metal detectors. I was getting impatient, shifting from one foot to the other. My biggest pet peeve is being late followed by waiting line. Finally we got through security and made our way to the boarding door.

We got there just as a flight attendant was closing the doors. The flight attendant saw us running so she waited with a annoyed look on her face, and we made our way onto the plane. I sat in between Maddy and Mira. As soon as we took off I took a deep breath, turned my iPod on, plugged my ear buds in, and closed my eyes. We made it, we were off to our new home. All my tension eased away gradually as the plane took off, and i was lost in thought.

Mira was my mother, most people don't think about callimg their parents by their given name but whenever im not talking to her personally i'll refer to her as Mira. That's just the way it is. Maddelyn, or Maddy as i call her is my identical twin and she does the same.

Mira was famous in the engineering world where her alter ego name was very known. No one really knows why she refuses to use her real name. When we were 8 she went to school and majored in computer and technology engineering. After she got her BA degree she went for her Masters. Using her connections she rose incredibly fast in the industry. We lived very comfortably happy until everything changed. We started moving around a few years ago only staying in one place for a few months at a time. I am definitely not the same girl i was back then. I was forced to change. Forced to grow up.

I looked at the seat next to me and looked at the sleeping toddler with long black lashes and soft raven curls. She looked so peaceful and innocent with her lip pouting as she slept. So incredibly tiny but so very strong. My sweet adorable daughter.

I named her Angel because she saved me from losing myself when all i wanted to do was die. She's my guardian angel.

We all unanimously decided that it was time to stop running and go back to our hometown. Ojai. Coincidentially, Mira was offered the perfect job there the day after we discussed it.

My mom never told us why we moved away from Ojai in the first place, it’s always been a mystery. Mira said never to ask because she’ll tell us when she’s ready. It has been years and frankly I lost interest in the subject. What’s done is done.

Shifting uncomfortably I moved in my seat until I was comfy, leaned my head on Maddys shoulder who was on the other side of me, and before i knew it i dozed off.

"RAEGHHH!!!!" a ugly monster like voice said in my ear. I jumped out of my seat startled. Maddy looked at me innocently and then she started to laugh uncontrollably. Mira joined Maddy and started to laugh at me too. I slept through the whole flight and the plane had landed already. I looked towards my mom and gave her the best hurt expression I could manage and stalked right past them. Stopping to pick up sleeping Angel in my arms before I continued, I heard footsteps behind me it was Maddy and Mira giving me apologetic looks. I stopped walking and looked at them laughing.

"Gotcha!" I said and we all laughed.

After we got our laughter under control we got off the airplane. We landed on the Santa Paula airport just about 12 ½ miles away from Ojai. After baggage claim Mira asked for a taxi as I walked over to some seats, set my bags down on the floor and waited for it to arrive.

A couple minutes later Mira sat next to me and set her head on my shoulder.

"Desirae, how do you feel about this move?" She straightened up and looked at me seriously. She only calls me Desirae when she’s trying to be serious.

I thought for a while and finally replied,

"Well to be honest I am excited because we got family here, this will be good for us all," nodding towards Angel resting in my arms. She had the head leaning on my shoulder looking at her nana, sucking on her thumb. I smacked her hand away, i've been trying to get her to stop the habit.

Anyway I want her to grow up where i did, in our hometown. Moving around was confusing to Angel, i don't want her to be scarred or godforbid ask me why we were moving around in the first place. I dreaded the day i had to tell her of how she came into the world, when she started to talk and comprehend she didn't have a daddy and i was very young, too young to have her. This move would be the last. I couldn't live in fear anymore that Angel would be discovered. This would be the last move.

The lady behind the desk waved at us to get our attention, and then pointed towards a cab outside. Our ride was here, we loaded our stuff in the trunk , and finally made a short journey to our new home. Well as short as it can goven that we were at a busy airport.

I looked out the window throughout the whole ride remembering the day we left, this time we are returning, not running away. I was so little I didn’t know what was going on. It was a normal day, i was out playing with my friend and when i got home Mira had our stuff packed ready to go. And that was that.

We were almost to our new house. I rolled down the window of the cab and breathed in the air, it smelled... salty. It was ocean air, Mira said our new place was just a few blocks from the beach.

Mira said our home has 2 floors, 5 bedrooms, a restroom in each room plus one downstairs. It also has a pool and a Jacuzzi in the back yard. This was new, we never in our lives lived in all luxurious. In fact, up until a few months ago we were in tiny apartments. Not exactly struggling to make ends meet but still it was no where as luxurious as this new place.

Old money. That's how we were able to live in this neighborhood. Mira inherited it from her paternal families side recently. Her grandmother, my great-grandmother Eleanor recently passed away and her entire fortune was left to Mira, her only next of kin. Eleanors attorney tracked us down, though we made it hard for him to find us since we kept moving around and he set everything uo for Mira.

The inheritance would have us set for life honestly. I never met her before and Miras only memories of her are of when she was a child. Well we weren't about to question if we knew her well or not, we've been blessed.

As I was getting out the taxi I looked at the house, OUR new home. There on the driveway was 2 cars one looked old and broken down, the other brand new. The house was painted very light blue, the windows looked big and tall. The pretty curtains were closed shut.

There were 2 garage doors and a small staircase that led to the front door. After paying the driver Maddy and Mira grabbed our bags from the trunk. They waited for me who was getting Angel and her carseat out the cab and we unlocked the front door and walked in together and my jaw dropped. The house was just BEAU-TI-FUL, and huge. Fully furnished and it fit US and our tastes perfectly. Mira had to have had found time to get someone to decorate without letting us know. I couldn't believe our luck, i couldn't believe that THIS was our life now. I looked at Maddy to see if reaction was the same and it was, Mira chuckled behind us.

"I take it you girls like it?" she said.

"Like it?" Maddy said. "Uh, duh."

They both turned to me, while all i did was stare wide eyed taking in my surroundings. Then i mentally stopped drooling and simply nodded.

Maddy shouted running up the stairs "Lets choose our rooms! I call first dibs sorry Rae but finders keepers losers weepers…" her voice faded as she got further away ad got distracted. I followed suit, ran upstairs with Angel and found the perfect room right across the hall from Maddys room. It was spacey as the rest of the house, there was already a bed and like downstairs it looked like a expensive bed. On the wall was a big TV. In the corner there was a empty vanity set up. There was 2 doors in the room, I opened one to reveal the closet was half the size of the room. I was psyched.

The rooms entire floor was covered in the soft white carpet."Wow…". I shook my head and turned towards the other door, "that must be the restroom then."

"What do you think bubs, you like our new home? You do don't you? How could you not?" I cooed at her. She just looked up at me with wide blue eyes looking very confused and lost. My heart ached, new places were a constant for her and she probably thought this was just another place to stop for a bit before we moved on. "Look bubs," I stared straight into her eyes.

"We are going to stay her for many many years, until momma has a steady job. No more moving around i promise. This is where you'll grow up from now on! Just like momma, ok?" She wasn't really listening but responded with a small 'Ok' when she heard the last part. I grinned into the crook if her tiny neck making her do her signature giggle. Such a big girl pretending she understood.

I remembered then that i haven't looked at the rest of the house and that there was more rooms. Feeling incredibly happy i put Angel down and told her to follow me. She stumbled walked behind me not wanting to be left behind. We walked down the hall and it turned right. In the hall there was two doors. The first room was big and empty, i had a fleeting thought that it could be converted into a entertainment room.

The second room though was locked and i really wanted to see inside. I shouted to make sure sure she heard me and asked for Mira to come up.

A few short moments later she rounded the corner with Maddy towing behind her. They had a sparkle in their eye as if they were hiding something. My guard instantly went up and my spine stiffened. I hate surprises and they knew that.

Mira saw me tense up and reassured me that whatever was in the room was good. Why did they have it locked then? She unlocked the door but stepped aside without opening the door and looked at me expectantly. I just stood looking at the door.

"Mom and I came up with the idea for this a few weeks ago and have been trying hard to keep it from you, hope you like it. Go ahead and open it i promise it's nothing bad."

I looked up at them and shrugged, opening the door and gasped. The walls were painted a beautiful dark pink and
